Below are films and books that are vital if you want to become a successful author or screenwriter. These include famous, iconic films, enticing books and underrated bits and pieces that are sure to inspire.
“If you don't see yourself in a book, write that book because the world wants to read it.”
Films:
Knives Out
A film with an all-star cast, including the likes of Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis and Chris Evans, directed by Rian Johnson. This funny, enticing film serves as a brilliant example of how to create a dramatic, unpredictable plot twist and how to create an imaginative modern take on the mystery genre.
Joker
The brilliance of this film is the in depth character study of the Joker, played by Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips. The film is riddled with advice as to how to explore the emotions of a character and an ultimate guide of how to make an audience sympathize with such a controversial, evil character.
Jojo Rabbit
This Oscar-worthy satire about a boy living in Nazi Germany and falling in love with the regime, accompanied with an imaginary friend who happens to be Adolf Hitler, played ever so comically by Taika Watiti. The reason this film was nominated for an Oscar is because it manages to find a middle ground between satire/irony and drama, which makes it twice as impactful than simply a 'dramatic' movie.
Inception
An insight into the wonderful, imaginative mind of Christopher Nolan who delivers an intense, complex movie which makes an audience question over and over again whether their interpretation of the movie is correct. This movie is a guide to how to create a thrilling plot line that never seems to take a break throughout it's whole run time.
Interstellar
Probably one of the best space movies of all time starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon. This film has aged as one of the most emotional, star studded movies of the past decade exploring dark, fresh themes. Another breath-taking, brilliant Christopher Nolan film which delivers an example of how to make an audience sympathize with the main character throughout his journey.
I Lost My Body
Despite being an animation, I Lost My Body shows a writer how to create a strange, eerie story-line that grabs an audience by the hand and leads them into a peculiar, heartfelt world. This film a highly underrated insight into how to create a heart-warming film that dwindles in the supernatural but is nevertheless believable and emotional. Available on Netflix to be checked out!

Books:
Release By Patrick Ness
Ness is potentially one of the best authors of the last decade who finds a way to write impactful books about people and life which include a hint of the supernatural and fantasy. However despite his wide array of award winning books, Release, about Adam Thorn growing up in a Frome, Washington, is his best book that will have you on the edge of your seat and on the brink of tears by its end.
King Rat By James Clavell
This book is a highly impactful piece of historical fiction about Peter Marlowe who is a prison at a Japanese Camp during World War 2. This book is amazing particularly because it is drawn from personal experience, the author found himself in the same situation in 1943, which makes it highly realistic.
Green Mile By Stephen King
Of course Stephen King had to make the list with a book that is even better than the movie! Stephen King takes us along to Cold Mountain Penitentiary to explore the life of a prison guard who is surrounded by men on death row waiting for their time to come. This is a book that shows how to create an emotional end, effective subplots and iconic, mysterious characters.
